A Shell of Smiles

Do not go silently into the night,
Despair is black, digs hollow holes within
Dreaming of white, hands reaching for the light.

All they see is a shell of smiles despite
Exhaustion corroding and skin worn thin.
Do not go silently into the night.

A storm is brewing, seeking to ignite,
Beckoning me to commit one last sin.
Dreaming of white, hands reaching for the light.

They, my internal enemies unite;
Heavy as lead they smother me and grin.
Do not go silently into the night.

Is there a way out? Nothing is in sight,
Only honesty promises peace when
Dreaming of white, hands reaching for the light.

If I had shared my frustrations forthright
Then maybe I wouldn’t repeat again:
Do not go silently into the night.
Dreaming of white, hands reaching for the light.

This is my go at a Villanelle poem, enjoy!
